Antioxidant properties of some filamentous green algae (Chaetomorpha Genus) BABT
Farasat,Massoumeh; Khavari-Nejad,Ramazan-Ali; Nabavi,Seyed Mohammad Bagher; Namjooyan,Foroogh.
The antioxidant activity and the contents of total phenolics and flavonoids were quantified in the methanolic extracts of four Chaetomorpha species including C. aerea, C. crassa, C. linum and C. brachygona. Eight samples of Chaetomorpha plants were collected from five locations along the northern coasts of the Persian Gulf in south of Iran from December 2010 until October 2011. Methanolic extracts of the seaweeds were assessed for their antioxidant activity using DPPH radical scavenging assay. C. linum showed highest antioxidant potential with a relatively low IC50 (1.484 ± 0.168 mg mL-1), the highest flavonoid content (18.177 ± 2.238 mg RE g-1 ) and a relatively high content of phenolics (2.895 ± 0.415 mg GAE g-1) in comparison with the other species. C....

BIOFERTILIZATION WITH CHLOROPHYTA AND CYANOPHYTA: AN ALTERNATIVE FOR ORGANIC FOOD PRODUCTION Acta biol.Colomb.
ORTIZ-MORENO,Martha Lucía; SOLARTE-MURlLLO,Laura Vanessa; SANDOVAL-PARRA,Karen Ximena.
ABSTRACT Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta are photosynthetic organisms characterized by their biochemical plasticity, which has allowed them to develop in different environments and have a faster growth rate than plants. Depending on the species and environmental conditions, these organisms can produce nitrogenous enzymes, for atmospheric nitrogen fixation; phosphatases, that solubilize phosphorus; phytohormones, that promote plant growth; and hygroscopic polysaccharides, that prevent erosion and improve soil characteristics. In this sense, the aim of this review was to analyze the available information on the use of Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta as biofertilizers and their potential application in organic food production. Multiple studies and researches were found...

Effect of cobalt on growth, pigments and the photosynthetic electron transport in Monoraphidium minutum and Nitzchia perminuta Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
El-Sheekh,M.M.; El-Naggar,A.H.; Osman,M.E.H.; El-Mazaly,E..
The unicellular green alga Monoraphidium minutum and the diatom Nitzschia perminuta were cultured under different concentrations of Co2+. Growth and pigment content were slightly increased at low concentrations and inhibited by high Co2+ concentrations. The results concerning the effect of different concentrations of Co2+ on photosynthetic O2 evolution showed a reduction in the amount of O2 evolved by each alga in response to increasing Co2+ concentrations. However, an increase in O2 evolution for both M. minutum and N. perminuta was observed at relatively low Co2+ concentrations. Photosynthetic electron transport in M. minutum was more sensitive to Co2+ toxicity than in N. perminuta. On the other hand, the effect of the heavy metal on respiration showed...

Effect of nutrients on total lipid content and fatty acids profile of Scenedesmus obliquus BABT
Darki,Behrouz Zarei; Seyfabadi,Jafar; Fayazi,Sima.
ABSTRACT The effect of nutrients on the total lipid content and fatty acid profile of Scenedesmus obliquus isolated from the south coast of the Caspian Sea was evaluated. The nutritional compositions of the media impacted the growth rate and biomass of S. obliquus that ranged from 0.175 day-1 to 0.209 day-1and 0.92 gr·l-1 to 1.79 gr·l-1, respectively. The alga grew better in the medium which was characterized by higher levels of sodium and trace elements such as Fe, Mn, Mo, and Co and poor in N and P as compared with the other media. The highest level of the total lipid (32%) and the highest values of saturated fatty acids, in particular palmitic acid also were positively correlated with these nutrients. Peaks in polyunsaturated fatty acids (43.7 %),...

Joint effects of nine antidepressants on Raphidocelis subcapitata and Skeletonema marinoi : a matter of amine functional groups ArchiMer
Minguez, Laetitia; Bureau, Ronan; Halm-lemeille, Marie-pierre.
Antidepressants are among the most prescribed pharmaceuticals throughout the world. Their presence has already been detected in several aquatic ecosystems worldwide and their effects on non-target organisms justify the growing concern of both the public and regulatory authorities. These emerging pollutants do not occur as isolated compounds but rather as multi-component mixtures, which may lead to increased adverse effects compared to individual compounds. Freshwater and marine algae seem particularly sensitive to pharmaceuticals, including antidepressants. Studies assessing the toxicity of antidepressant mixture to algae focused mainly on binary mixtures of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. In the present experiment, the freshwater algae...

ArchiMer
Ifremer, Del; Ceva, Pleubian.
In 1995, the gulf of Morbihan was not showing on the whole a pronounced level of eutrophication, but has nonetheless three sites of green algae proliferation: the Auray river estuary, the branches of the Vannes and Séné estuary, as well as the outlet of the Noyalo's estuary. Only these last two sectors show algal developments that are "abnormal" and that can be linked to a specific phenomenon of eutrophication (Ulva green tide in the Rosvellec-Séné sector, Monostroma green tide in the Saint Armel-Tascon sector). In the spring of 1995, the observations made on the foreshores of the Gulf of Morbihan, excluding the islands, made it possible to estimate an algal biomass of between 2,000 and 6,000 tons.

Piriou, Jean-yves; Chapron, Victorien; Annezo, Jean-pierre.
The gulf of Morbihan, without manifesting any pronounced signs of eutrophication, has, in 1995, three sites of green algae proliferation: the Auray river estuary, the branches of the Vannes and Séné estuary, as well as the outlet of the Noyalo's estuary. They are also the three sectors of the gulf that receive the most nutrient salts, in particular, nitrogen, which is a determining factor in the development of nitrophilic green algae (Ménesguen and Piriou 1995). During spring the nitrogen seems to come as much from urban sources (Vannes, Auray) as from agricultural sources coming from the northern catchment areas of the gulf.

Chérif, W.; El Bour, M.; Daly Yahia-Kefi, O..

Selective elimination of chloroplastidial DNA for metagenomics of bacteria associated with the green alga Caulerpa Taxifolia (bryopsidophyceae) ArchiMer
Aires, Tania; Marba, Nuria; Serrao, Ester A.; Duarte, Carlos M.; Arnaud-haond, Sophie.
Molecular analyses of bacteria associated with photosynthetic organisms are often confounded by coamplification of the chloroplastidial 16S rDNA with the targeted bacterial 16S rDNA. This major problem has hampered progress in the characterization of bacterial communities associated to photosynthetic organisms and has limited the full realization of the potential offered by the last generation of metagenomics approaches. A simple and inexpensive method is presented, based on ethanol and bleach treatments prior to extraction, to efficiently discard a great part of chloroplastidial DNA without affecting the characterization of bacterial communities through pyrosequencing. Its effectiveness for the description of bacterial lineages associated to the green...

Trophic niche of two co-occurring ophiuroid species in impacted coastal systems, derived from fatty acid and stable isotope analyses ArchiMer
Blanchet-aurigny, Aline; Dubois, Stanislas; Quere, Claudie; Guillou, Monique; Pernet, Fabrice.
The trophic niches of 2 common co-occurring ophiuroids, Ophiocomina nigra and Ophiothrix fragilis (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea), in 2 contrasting coastal systems of Brittany (France) were investigated. We used a combination of fatty acid biomarkers derived from neutral lipids and stable isotopic compositions to explore the contributions of oceanic versus continental inputs to the ophiuroids' diet. We investigated 2 different systems with an inshore versus offshore comparison. We sampled potential food sources and surveyed organisms every 2 mo for 1 yr. Spatio-temporal variations in stable isotopes and fatty acid profiles of the ophiuroids were generally low compared to interspecific differences. Fatty acid markers showed that both ophiuroids relied on...
